SFICRO302
Conduct Crocodile Surveys
This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to plan and carry out crocodile field surveys in natural crocodile habitats — gathering data on crocodile presence, population, size, habitat conditions, and other ecological or behavioural indicators.
Designed for wildlife officers, environmental survey teams, land and waterway managers, conservation officers, Indigenous ranger programs, or researchers undertaking crocodile habitat monitoring and conservation.
What This Course Covers:
• Planning of crocodile field survey activities: defining objectives, selecting survey sites, logistical and supply planning, accessing maps, GPS data or other spatial information, and ensuring compliance with legislation, biosecurity and environmental standards.
• Preparation of equipment and supplies required for field survey according to survey objectives.
• Conducting field survey: travelling to and locating survey site(s), performing surveys under waterway safety procedures, team coordination and communication, collecting accurate data (crocodile sightings, size estimates, habitat observations), and minimising environmental impact and biosecurity risks.
• Finalising survey: cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing equipment; identifying and reporting any faults; completing required documentation and data records according to workplace and survey program requirements.
Training is conducted in a culturally respectful and safety-focused environment, with a strong emphasis on real-world scenarios, especially for those working in Indigenous ranger programs or land/waterway management roles.
