Three Pathways to a Maritime Career

At INLOC, we offer three key qualifications designed to match different career aspirations and experience levels.

MAR10224 – Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand)
This entry-level certification is perfect for those just starting in the maritime industry. If you’re looking to work as a deckhand or assist with vessel operations, this course provides the essential foundational skills needed to get your foot in the door.

What you can do with this qualification:
• Assist with cargo handling and vessel operations
• Work as a General Purpose Hand NC on commercial vessels
• Gain experience to progress towards higher maritime certifications

Ideal for beginners eager to get hands-on experience in maritime operations!

MAR10424 – Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal)
Looking to take on more responsibility and operate small commercial vessels? The Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal certification is a great choice for those wanting to work in tourism, fishing, or marine transport.

What you can do with this qualification:
• Operate vessels up to 12 metres long
• Carry passengers and cargo in inshore waters
• Work in the commercial maritime industry
Perfect for those looking to start a small marine business or take on a leadership role on smaller vessels!

MAR20324 – Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal)
Ready to captain a vessel and advance in your maritime career? The Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal qualification allows graduates to take on higher levels of responsibility in maritime operations.

What you can do with this qualification:
• Command and operate vessels under 12 metres
• Work within 15 nautical miles from shore
• Serve as a chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels under 24 metres
• Operate with unlimited outboard propulsion or inboard engines under 500 kW

Training Duration and Additional Certification Requirements

Our training is designed to provide both theoretical and practical skills, ensuring you’re job-ready upon completion.

Training Structure:

  • Coxswain Grade 1 runs for approximately six weeks
  • Coxswain Grade 2 and General Purpose Hand qualifications have shorter durations, depending on student requirements

To obtain full certification for Coxswain qualifications, students must also complete sea-time requirements.

Coxswain Grade 1: 150 days at sea OR 30 days with an AMSA task book (available through INLOC)

Coxswain Grade 2: 10 days at sea with logbook completion

  • Obtain a Short-Range Radio Certificate (INLOC can provide this training)
  • Complete a First Aid Certificate (available through INLOC)
  • Undertake a Domestic Seafarer’s Medical (AMSA form 1850)
  • Submit AMSA form 426 at an approved Australia Post outlet
