Community Engagement & Capacity Building

Community Development

INLOC’s commitment to community development is rooted in collaborative efforts with local communities, especially in areas close to Australia, such as the South Fly District of Papua New Guinea. By working alongside these communities, INLOC plays a crucial role in promoting conservation and sustainable practices that are tailored to local needs and environmental challenges.

Through the Building Resilience in Treaty Villages (BRTV) Program, INLOC has laid the groundwork for enhanced community resilience, focusing on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH), governance, and skills development. This initiative has led to the recruitment and training of 110 Rangers, both male and female, who serve as frontline workers in community development, embodying the bridge between traditional knowledge and modern conservation techniques.

Capacity Building

The capacity-building aspect of INLOC’s work is designed to fortify the skills and capabilities of communities and individuals, preparing them to effectively manage their resources and face future challenges. Following the BRTV Program, INLOC tackled the immediate needs arising from the dual disasters of COVID-19 and flooding through the Disaster Support Program (DSP). This swift response highlighted INLOC’s agility and commitment to supporting communities in crisis.

Ranger Expansion

As part of the South Fly Resilience Program (SFRP), INLOC has expanded its team to 180 Rangers, focusing on delivering tangible, on-ground projects that span a wide range of sectors:

R

Aquaculture

Initiatives like crab farming and fisheries development aim to enhance food security and provide sustainable income sources.

R

Horticulture

Projects include the development of cocoa and vanilla nurseries, irrigation systems, and reforestation efforts to promote environmental sustainability and economic growth.

R

Livestock Farming

Introducing deer and poultry farming as viable options for diversifying food sources and creating livelihood opportunities.

R

Food Sustainability

Implementing mobile canneries, refrigeration, and market development strategies to ensure the long-term viability of food resources.

R

Small Business Support

Encouraging economic independence through ventures in water catchment, solar power, and timber milling, among others.

Moreover, INLOC’s role in supporting the Province-wide health master plan exemplifies its holistic approach to community engagement, extending operational support across various terrains, from urban centres to remote atolls. This comprehensive involvement is further enriched by contributions to DFAT-sponsored programs, such as facilitating technology transfers in well and tank building through Ranger exchanges and providing essential services for exploratory missions to areas like Arawa-Panguna.
